Creativity, Activity, Service"...if you believe in something, you must not just think or talk, or write, but must act." - Peterson (2003)
IB understands the challenges of CAS during COVID. Students- do your best to begin/maintain your CAS activities and make sure you are keeping a record of those experiences.
CAS is at the heart of the IB Diploma Program. It is one of the three essential elements in every student's Diploma Program Experience. It involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies throughout the Diploma Program. CAS enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and helps students develop their own identities. The CAS component of the IB Diploma Program also enables students to see the importance of reflection and developing self awareness. A student's CAS experience can stay with them long after they have graduated. Successful completion of CAS is mandatory for IB Diploma candidate.
Creativity means the arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
Activity is physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
Service is an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. The rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved are respected.
For student development to occur, CAS should involve:
ALL PROPOSED CAS ACTIVITIES MUST MEET THE ABOVE FOUR CRITERIA. CAS activities should continue on a regular basis throughout the IB program. IB Prep 9th and 10th graders should begin thinking about CAS activities; IB Juniors and Seniors should be involved in those activities over the 18 months of their Jr. and Sr. year.
As students consider activities for CAS, keep in mind that IB stresses that the CAS core requirement is not about "ticking off hours" for completion of a task. All seven CAS Learning Outcomes must be fulfilled.
